Outline
This section introduces the concept of SAMIS & briefly discusses how it supports the SAM process. It includes a description of the 4 SAMIS products, the different SAMIS Environments, User Roles & Security Settings.
What is Strategic Asset Management (SAM)?
SAM is the recommended government process which can help a range of users to assess & strategically manage & maintain their physical assets. By using this process, agencies are able to plan Asset investment strategies based on agreed service delivery requirements.

What is the Strategic Asset Management Information System (SAMIS)?
SAMIS is an online information system designed to help Government Agencies better manage their Asset portfolios. SAMIS provides a number of tools to help users work through the SAM process. The system has been designed to meet the needs of Government Agencies.

SAMIS provides information about:
- What Buildings and other Assets are owned or utilised by the South Australian Government
- The location of Buildings and other Assets
- How well each Asset meets its intended purpose
- Whether an Asset meets community needs both now and in the future
- The value of each Asset and the cost of ownership over its remaining useful life
- The compliance of each Asset to relevant acts

The SAM Process & SAMIS Tools
The various SAMIS tools support the different steps in the SAM process. Users with different roles & levels of security access will use some or all of the tools.

Environments
SAMIS has 3 main environments:
- Test Environment (UAT)
Used for System Testing & User Acceptance Testing. Contains replica & fictitious data
- Production Environment
The live system. Data exists for Agency Users to develop & maintain. New & existing functionality has been tested & accepted.
- Training Environment
The environment for users to learn & experiment with functionality & processes. It contains replica data, which is periodically refreshed.

User Roles & Security
An individual user is not allocated access to SAMIS modules; they are assigned Roles and it is these Roles that are given appropriate security access.
- Each user is allocated one or more Roles. When multiple Roles are assigned, the user has access to everything each Role has.
- All users allocated to the same Role will have the same system functionality.
- Users can be allocated a Role for a specific Facility, Site or even Asset Class.
- Refer to the following table for a list of common User Roles & their descriptions.
